I studied Textile Design at Massey University here in Wellington. Since graduating I have worked within the fashion/interior and industrial design/product industries for the past 10 years. I have worked both in New Zealand and The Netherlands. I love being able to apply my Textile Design skills to a wide range of applications and products.
My role for mokopuna is really varied which is great. I am across all steps of design, manufacturing and quality assurance.
I start by creating the initial design direction and mood boards for each collection. I then design all new garments and prints and am responsible for selecting all new season colours drawn from international trends and leading textile design fairs such as Première Vision. I also plan, direct and style each photoshoot.
I also work closely with our suppliers and our warehouse team to ensure we have the best quality products in market.
It starts with a lot of brainstorming and research. Which then leads to experimentation and print development. I am a really hands on designer, and so for most of my prints I prefer to hand draw/paint the initial motifs before digitally manipulating and setting them up for production.
For the new collection I wanted to bring in a new pop of colour, and the colour that kept jumping out during my research was the mustard yellow tone which is on trend with Première Vision and Textile View colour forecasts for 2019 and beyond.
For the all over print I wanted something soft and celestial feeling that would work well for babies so it is really important that the design works across a large selection of our garments.
The simplistic placement star print was then developed from this to tie in the toddler garments.
It's really important to use that the garments in our range are unisex so I work have to ensure the colours and prints are gender neutral working well for both girls and boys. The colours all complement each other, making it it easy for parents to mix and match their little ones outfits.

Oooo that's a tricky one. I love the stardust and butterscotch bodysuits, but I also really love the new stardust cocoono (wish it came in my size... so snuggly!).
