Top 5 features of merino - why it is so amazing!

Alana   27 February 2019

Mokopuna was one of pioneers in New Zealand for making baby garments using 100% superfine merino wool.

While many of other brands substitute high-quality merino for a lower grade, or make savings using cotton outer fabric with merino lining, we are proud of our collection of 100% pure merino clothing and sleepwear. Our focus on quality means that our products are often passed down from sibling to sibling and loved by the whole family, giving you amazing cost per wear.

Here are the top 5 reasons merino is such an amazing fabric:

1. Temperature regulating

The real magic of our merino is that it allows your little one to stay warm when the weather is colder and stay cool when the weather is warmer. Merino is breathable, wicking moisture away from your baby's skin to prevent overheating. It also insulates so that your baby can be warm and comfortable, sleep soundly and gain the energy needed to grow. A great way to think about it is merino will help to keep baby's temperature constant, like a personal thermostat!

2. 100% natural

Merino fibre is annually renewable, sustainable, and naturally biodegradable meaning it breaks down when buried in soil, slowly releasing valuable nutrients back into the earth, unlike synthetic fibers like polyester, polar fleece and polypropylene which shed tiny fibres when washed and are a major contributor to ocean pollution.

3. Silky soft against young skin

Free of harsh chemicals, beautifully fine and lightweight Mokopuna merino is luxuriously soft next to young skin so there's no itch or scratch. Mokopuna uses 18.9 micron/195 gsm merino. Other brands use 200-280 gsm or 22 micron. What does this mean? The lower the micron, the finer the fibre and the softer the fabric!

4. The safe fibre for your baby

Mokopuna merino is warm even when wet, yet prevents the overheating that can lead to SIDS. Merino is fire retardant (exceeds fire safety requirements for BS 5722), if ignited it will burn slowly and may even self-extinguish. Other natural fibers like cotton, linen and silk can be extremely flammable when untreated.

5. Machine washable
Traditional wool needs to be hand washed which can be time consuming and let’s face it, who has the time!  Mokopuna merino is super easy care; it’s machine washable and can even be popped in the dryer on a low heat. Merino is also naturally stain and odour resistant - perfect for messy play!
